Park or get a lift at Edinburgh?

For a week away, the cheapest parking we can see is £300. A lift costs nothing in airport charges using the free option, or £17 using the terminal zones. The real cost of a lift is your driver's time and fuel: put your mileage into the calculator below.

Lift or park: which is cheaper?

Being dropped off and picked up means your driver does the trip twice each way: four journeys. This adds that up using Edinburgh's own charges.

Booking: Edinburgh Airport says booking early saves up to 77%, and that pre-booked prices vary with how far ahead you book, supply and demand, the car park's distance from the terminal and the time of year. Multi-Storey, Mid Stay and FastPark are pre-book only; drive-up spaces in Long Stay, Terminal and Plane Parking are not guaranteed.

Meet and greet: FastPark is the airport's own digital valet: drive through the photo booth, check in at FastPark reception, drop your keys in the key chute, and FastPark drivers park the car on airport. On return you collect your keys from a locker using your booking barcode. Less than a minute's walk to check-in.

Blue Badge: Vehicles carrying a Blue Badge holder get one hour free in any Edinburgh Airport car park, including the drop-off and pick-up areas. Press the intercom at the exit barrier and give the 16-character badge code. Designated spaces are in Terminal Parking and on each Multi-Storey floor; all car parks except Mid Stay have wider spaces. The scheme does not apply on the airport road system.

Electric cars: Terminal Parking: 15 x 22kW chargers (£0.55p per kW plus a £1 plugin fee, in the airport's own words). Plane Parking: 20 x 7kW chargers at the same rate, no time limit. FastPark Electric Charging can be booked. Tesla Superchargers at the Almond House car park. No chargers in Multi-Storey, Mid Stay or Long Stay.

Off-airport parking

Off-airport car parks and meet-and-greet firms are private businesses, not part of the airport. Many are fine and cheaper, but check before you book: where the car is actually kept, how the transfer works and how often it runs, whether the car park has the Park Mark Safer Parking award, the firm's cancellation terms and recent reviews. Meet-and-greet firms that aren't the airport's own can't use the terminal forecourt without paying the airport's charges like anyone else.

What Edinburgh Airport says: Edinburgh Airport says all its car parks are on airport grounds and the closest to the terminal. No specific warning about off-airport operators found on its parking pages.
